About Jack Lord

Jack Lord's 1959 acting class notebook. A green three-ring binder filled with acting notes taken by Lord, best known for his long running role as Detective Steve McGarret on Hawaii Five-O. Early in his career, Lord was among many esteemed performers to study under legendary acting coach Sanford Meisner at the Neighborhood Playhouse in New York. Notebook is thought to be from a class Lord took under Meisner and includes many quotes attributed to "S.M." Entries span from 28 May to 3 July 1959. 12 June: "S.M. criticism - You use the facts and not what they mean to you. It is the way that you use the facts that makes us understand the facts. T is a great deal of difference between intelligence and actor's intelligence." 10 July: "S.M. 'You were acting seductive instead of doing things in a seductive way.' What does this mean? The same old story, 'Have it don't show it, if you have it, it will show'?e?acting is behavior and behavior is doing not saying?e?" An undated excerpt offers Meisner's famous definition of the craft to which Lord dedicated his life: "?e?Acting is the ability to live really under imaginary circumstances. Acting is tfore doing and emotion comes from doing?e?" Though best known for his Hawaii Five-O role, Lord had a lengthy and diverse career in American television, film and stage, both as performer and director. Notebook measures 9" x 11" and holds more than 30pp. of handwritten notes and exercises. Mild edgewear to green covers and partial separation to backstrip label.
